Riviera del Brenta Guide
It is an extraordinary that completes any visit to Venice, yet is so full of treasures as to warrant a special trip of its own. A truly fascinating way to visit the Riviera and the oldest and most genuine way of savouring the sights is from a boat. By boat you will able to visit the network of rivers and canals that has linked the villages of the Riviera for thousands of years. There are dozens of canal locks, swing bridges, quaysides, gangways, jetties, slipways, and sloping banks: the fully-equipped system that means you can enjoy the Brenta in the oldest and must fascinating way. The many Villas (maily in service and inhabited), gardens and historic buildings along the Riviera are open to the public, some are open at certain time only, others are closed to visitors. Thanks to the initiative "Open Villas" some owners have decided to share their fine residences, opening the gates on certain days at certain times to small groups of organized and discerning tourists. Along the Riviera the Villas are located maily from Strà to Malcontenta. The River is rich in villages that are worth a visit: Campagna Lupia with its archaeological Museum; Campolongo Maggiore with its thatched cottages; Camponogara where Villa Manfredini is located; Dolo; Fiesso d'Artico; Fossò; Mira; Vigonovo; Malcontenta with its famous Villa Foscari and Stra' which boasts the renowned Villa Pisani.
Halfway between Padua and Venice, Dolo is where in olden times the stagecoach would stop on tis way to the embarkation point for Venice. It is not known exactly what the name derives from: perhaps from the Dauli family, or perhaps became in the 15th century those condemned to exile used to be sent here, dolo meaning "malice". Over the last few centuries it has been at the heart of the economy and manufaturing along the Riviera, thanks to its water mills, the posting inn, its having the only boat-building yard and for its canal locks. The centre of the old town offers glimpses of picturesque landscapes, and besides its famous fish restaurants there is the possibility of visiting many of renowned villas and attending the numerous cultural events such as the Exhibition of Pavement Artists, the Festival of the Villas and the Carnival "Dei Storti".
Stra is renowned worldwide for its stupendous noble residences and especially for Villa Pisani with its ballroom frescoed by Tiepolo, its stables, the park with its botanic gardens. Stra owes its name to the fact that it is located on the great Roman road that leads from Padua to Altino and Aquileia. Vaunting a wealth of artworks and set in still largely intact natural sorroundings, Stra is moreover an important industrial town, the centre of the footwear manufacturing district founded by its most illustrious citizen: G. Luigi Voltan.
Villa Pisani, situated in a green expance in a loop of the River Brenta at Stra is one of the most splendid villas in the world. The Pisani family had it built to celebrate in princely style theri rise to political power, when they were about to take the Dogeship in their hands. The villa was designed by one of the most distinguished architects of the time, Girolamo Frigimelica. Villa Foscari "La Malcontenta" was planned in 1556 by Andrea Palladio for Alvise and Nicolò Foscari, members of one of the most noble and powerful Venetian families. It is considered on of the most beautiful demesnes in the world. Celebrity well-merited for the harmony of its architecture, for the cycle of frescoes by G.B. Zelotti, for its splendid position overlooking a gentle bend in the Brenta quite near the lagoon.
