Veneto Guide
To know Veneto is not only to visit the Basilica of San Marco in Venice, the Basilica del Santo in Padua, the angels by Juste Le Court in Rovigo, the Town Theatre in Belluno, the archades in Treviso, the Arena in Verona or the Palladian Basilica in Vicenza. To know Veneto is also to discover a network of charming little towns which are rich in history and greatly enhance the human and cultural life of the region.
The Veneto is characterized by small and medium size agricultural companies, craft-based industries and by the service sector. These have reached advanced levels and this without disturbing the delicate balance between man and nature. Expanses of pastureland, wheat, corn-fields and vineyards surround big and small villages, which are scattered across the Venetian plain, with its network of streams and minor waterways. Large and small, famous or not famous, they all have the air of theatre sets of another era. The hills of the region too offer stunning scenery and an environment well-suited to rest and relaxation for all. Architecture, urban planning, welfare organisations and development projects have all benefited from centuries of government philosophy based on the widest possible consent and aimed at protecting human dignity and freedom.
Between the 16th and the 18th centuries, hundreds of Villas, designed by the most famous architects of the time, were built in the region. This contributed to the process and improvement of previously uncultivate land, helping to protect it from the ravages of the waters which surround it. The Veneto should also be seen as a region shaped by waters which continue to provide a livelihood for many. Just like coral reefs, the sea and the lagoon formed the swampy mud banks on which Venice is built and into that same sea and lagoon flow the rivers and streams which descend from the mountains and meader across the plain, bringing their vital waters with them. No less then than 120 km of uniterrupted benches extend along this stretch of the Adriatic coast.
As early as the Palaeolithic period, the ancient peoples of the region used to workship the River Gods: thousands of years of history flow by in the waters of the Piave, Brenta, Adige and Po. In the Alps and Pre-Alps, many enchanting mirror-like lakes can be found as well as the famous Lake Garda. And then there are the therapeutic and medicinal waters of spas such as Recoaro and the Terme Euganee. The famous Dolomites or "Pale", as they are also called, form an unique and uninterrpted range of peaks on whose slopes many well-known tourist resorts can be found: ideal for both Summer and Winter breaks. But for those who love skiing and climbing, the Veneto also offers a series of mountain-sites and plateaus of great beauty and interest. All kinds of traditions are respected and kept alive in all finds - gastronomy, performances, popular feasts and local markets - all over the Veneto. The arts, sciences and all other disciplines are cultivated to the very highest international levels all over the territory: not only in the universities of Venice, Verona and Padua (the third oldest University in the world), but also in many other cultural institutions.
